Hi nerds -
I salute you today from Panama City, where I plan to remain until next year.
Two months ago, I met some women online with a shared vision. Today, we decided to build it.
Surge is a female-led organization with the mission of onboarding and securing women’s place within Web3.
A vibrant Discord community, a Web3 educational newsletter, an upcoming jobs board for female talent, and a NFT collection soon to drop, we’re about to disrupt this space with a bunch of feminine energy 🌸.
With over 1500 members across platforms in less than a week, we’ve clearly identified and validated a pain.
Join us here to enjoy the early perksss and learn among us! 😉 (Men ally invited in as well, of course)
3 brain farts
😘 Software flirts: During acting class this week we were tasked with writing a personal monologue. The prompt: “Something you wouldn’t just tell anyone. Write about a transformative event that formed who you are today”
So I wrote an Ode to Code - a flirty love letter to Software Engineering, the babe that made me who I am today.
She taught me to be humble, because everyone is just reacting to the variables they’ve been given.
She taught me that all is better when we turn it off and on again. She taught me that I can change the world with my brain, a computer, and wifi.
Here’s the flirty piece if you want to indulge.
⚡️ Hell yeah or no: I’ve started applying a mentality of “hell yeah or no” to my life.
If time truly is a currency, then I have none to be spending on the maybes.
We compromise on things because we don’t want to lose someone’s approval, because we fear we may loose their friendship or love. But really, what we end up losing is ourselves.
Saying yes to something I don’t want to do means I’m saying no to myself - and that’s something I’m no longer willing to compromise.
👩🏻💻 Skeuomorphic vs Native: Chris Dixon, from a16z, thinks of revolutionary products in two eras: (a) the skeumorphic era, and (b) the native era.
The internet is a perfect example.
- Skeuomorphic era: in the beginning our first instinct was to create “digital adaptations of pre-internet ideas”. For ex - digital magazines, letter writing, or mail-order shopping.
- Native era: later, we realized the internet was in fact a giant of its own, with characteristics that enable new types of products to form. Social networking, productivity apps, automations, integrations, crowdfunding, etc were all tools built once we collectively grasped the depth and power of the internet as a new tool.
In crypto we’re seeing a similar pattern.
- Skeuomorphic era: decentralized adaptations of products that existed in pre-crypto times. Payment transfers, currency trading, supply chain management, secure storage, all better thanks to blockchain functionalities, but they barely scratch the surface of what Web3 can do.
- Native era: we’re starting to see new native products emerge enabled by innovative tokenization models. Tokens are crucial to Web3 not because they’re currency, but because they’re digital primitives providing ownership to contributors. Examples: DAOs exploring ways to pool funds and collectively govern among strangers, fractionalization of NFT ownership and their utilitarian value, tokenization of carbon offsets making pollution a luxury, among others. Expect more of these to arise as the space gains mainstream popularity.

1 funky audio
I’m a big fan of African music with deep beats.
This Ugandan gem is great to hear when you’re working on cool projects 😎.
& a featured snack
Pain: You want a CryptoPunk but are not willing to pay 500k.
Solution: PartyBid allows you to pool funds with friends and buy the NFT when you reach the its price. It will then distribute the tokens representing the fractionalized ownership among friends.
Thanks for reading.
