Product gardeners, Web3 gifts, and on-chain history

Published over 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hi nerds -

I salute you today from Panama City, as I pack for a paradisiac beach for one of my best friend's wedding 👰🏻‍♀️.

Currently, my NFT collection consists almost entirely on female-led projects, many of which are hosting special events this weekend throughout NFT Art Basel. This week, it's been so cool to see the URL to IRL movement kicking in strong.

🌳 Product gardener: Being a successful product gardener means understanding harvest time slots and returns.

  • There’s kale products - complex, iffy looking on the outside, but full of nutritious benefits in the long-term.
  • There’s sunflower products - beautiful and shiny, but require an awful lot of energy to grow.
  • And then, there’s bamboo products - those robust projects withstanding the strongest of storms, but taking at least 2-3 years to harvest.

Sow, garner, and reap the benefits. Just be careful not to the confuse seeds.

📜 On-chain history: Although we think of history as a set of facts, history is in fact subjective to whoever told the story. The writer’s bias becomes Truth for whoever was not there.

The cool thing about blockchain, though, is that all our transactions are being recorded for posterity - immutable and open for the world to see.

On-chain history means my crypto wallet becomes a record of my life: NFT badges gained through educational work, POAPs gifted after attending events, and investments made on projects I believe in.

On-chain history

🎄 Web3 Christmas: I’ve decided this Christmas I’ll be giving my loved ones Web3 gifts.

Why? Because (1) having skin in the game is the best way to gift curiosity, and (2) digital products produce less waste than physical products we wrap and discard. Here's some ideas:

ENS domains:

  • What & why: Ethereum Name Service is a protocol that offers .eth domains that represent your identity online, by working as a domain for your crypto wallet.
  • Where to buy: ENS App

NFTs:

  • What & why: Cool NFT projects donate money to an organization doing something cool for the planet or grant you access to perks and events.
  • Where to buy: OpenSea for Ethereum-based NFTs or Solart/MagicEden for Solana-based. Just make sure to read on the project before purchase.

Utility tokens:

First investments:

  • What & why: got a new baby in the fam? A Secret Santa with a set budget? I’m gifting them their first investments in ETH, BTC or SOL.
  • Where to buy: Centralized or decentralized exchanges like mentioned above.

Produce signal, mute noise - Jack Butcher

“It’s as hard to start and run a small business as it is to start a big one.

You will suffer the same toll financially and psychologically as you bludgeon it into existence. It’s hard to raise the money and to find the right people.

So if you’re going to dedicate your life to a business, which is the only way it will ever work, you should choose one with the potential to be huge.”

There’s something special about a song that hits my Spotify top ranks every Christmas 2017.

Here’s Sonate Pacifique, a song that makes me want to dance freely under a starry night.

Hi nerds - I salute you from Berlin, a city that strangely feels like a home away from home. This week, I spoke at DappCon, a conference for developers building crypto infrastructure. In a classic Berlin style, they had deep house playing in the yard, vegan food, green juices, and a wellness conference running on parallel at the top floor. Needless to say, one of my favorite crypto conferences so far. 3_brain_farts 💪🏽 Impact-effort matrix: The impact-effort matrix is a prioritization mental...

Hi nerds - I salute you from ETHCC in Paris, where I just presented a keynote about the smart contracts behind DAOs. We’ve been working hard at Aragon to launch our new product - a permission management system - and today was the first time we were sharing it so widely! Exciting time to be building in the open 🚀. 3_brain_farts 💖 How to find the one: Image you’re an employer looking to hire a Secretary and you need to hire him/her right after the interview. Hi nerds - I salute you from the Panama City airport, about to hop on a flight to Athens, Greece. Something interesting about bear markets is that they have been breeding ground for some of the most renown names in technology today: Square, Stripe, and Uber in 2009, Airbnb and Groupon in 2008, Facebook in 2004, Adobe in ‘82 and Microsoft in ‘75. But to build successful solutions teams need to run research - so that’s what we’re doing at Surge! If you have 1-2 minutes, please fill out this...
