Learning pods, creator economy, and the weather

Published about 3 years ago • 2 min read

Hi nerds -

I salute you from Miami!

I've been traveling through California and Oregon these past few days, doing some bookshop hunting and pondering about how much the how the climate of a city impacts people's behaviors.

3 intellectual goodies

  • Learning pods: I am ever more convinced that learning pods will replace schools. Learning pods are hyper-personalized, educational groups, where kids get together as they receive their online courses individually. This is the sweet spot between online education and physical schools. Kids take classes specifically tailored to their learning journey, while they get to hang out with other kids and get guidance from a local teacher. Parents, kids, and teachers design together the child's educational path based on their interests, talents, and eagerness. Kids learn from the best teachers around the world and have friends all over cyberspace.

  • The Weather: People who live in the same types of climate behave similarly even when they may be on opposite sides of the planet. They wear similar clothes, eat similar foods, and enjoy doing similar things during their spare time. There's an undeniable connection between our environment and our behavior. Finding a way to use that to our advantage is well-design urbanism.

  • Creator Economy: Currently, consumers are spending ~4.2 hours a day using apps on their smartphone. That's a 30% in increase from two years prior, translating to 38% increase in app spend. And it makes sense. We are studying, working, celebrating birthdays, and dating online, which explains why most of us feel overwhelmed with the infinite possibilities and overload of information. This is why we're willing to place our most valuable resources, trust and attention, in creators. Creators are virtually acting as our filter of the internet. The problem is, if we consume the same information everyone else does, we'll get the same results and ideas. The most interesting patterns come from obscure data, combined with life experiences and insightful observations.

2 brain farts

"In a world awash in information, the curator is king. Behind each digital throne is an algorithm, a specialized artificial intelligence that is powered by data. More data means better machine learning which attracts more talent that build better products that attract more users that generate more data. Rinse, repeat."
~ Imagining New Institutions for the Internet Age

"The art of debugging is figuring out what you really told your program to do rather than what you thought you told it to do."

~ Andrew Singer

I listen to Poolside.FM about the same amount I listen to Spotify these days.

Tokyo Disco, Hangover Club, or Friday Nite Heat, Poolside is a retro-modern version of your favorite summer radio station - with playlists for all moods and pods.

Wrapped around a Miami Vice design, Poolside.FM is candy for the eyes, the ears, and the soul. I highly recommend their Indie Summer playlist and their mobile app.

Until next time,

Hi nerds - I salute you from Berlin, a city that strangely feels like a home away from home. This week, I spoke at DappCon, a conference for developers building crypto infrastructure. In a classic Berlin style, they had deep house playing in the yard, vegan food, green juices, and a wellness conference running on parallel at the top floor. Needless to say, one of my favorite crypto conferences so far. 3_brain_farts 💪🏽 Impact-effort matrix: The impact-effort matrix is a prioritization mental...

Hi nerds - I salute you from ETHCC in Paris, where I just presented a keynote about the smart contracts behind DAOs. We’ve been working hard at Aragon to launch our new product - a permission management system - and today was the first time we were sharing it so widely! Exciting time to be building in the open 🚀. 3_brain_farts 💖 How to find the one: Image you’re an employer looking to hire a Secretary and you need to hire him/her right after the interview. Hi nerds - I salute you from the Panama City airport, about to hop on a flight to Athens, Greece. Something interesting about bear markets is that they have been breeding ground for some of the most renown names in technology today: Square, Stripe, and Uber in 2009, Airbnb and Groupon in 2008, Facebook in 2004, Adobe in ‘82 and Microsoft in ‘75. But to build successful solutions teams need to run research - so that’s what we’re doing at Surge! If you have 1-2 minutes, please fill out this...
